OEM Maintenance vs Third Party Maintenance

08th July 2020

Machine tools are often at the core of a manufacturing process, responsible for producing vital parts of the project. As machine tools are often heavily relied upon, their uptime is vital for a high level of productivity and to meet manufacturing benchmarks.

However, if you are experiencing ongoing problems with your machine tools, it can be difficult to know who the best person is to contact. Initially you may consider making contact with the OEM, but is this the most cost and time effective way to have your machinery maintained?

Third Party Machine Tool Maintenance

Machine tool maintenance can be carried out by a third-party company, independent from the original equipment manufacturer. A third-party maintenance company are able to work across a variety of machines and will look to repair the existing problem, rather than recommend new hardware.

There are a number of advantages to using a specialist machine tool maintenance company, including:

Costs

One of the most important aspects of machine tool maintenance is the cost, ensuring you aren’t overspending on a subpar service. When considering the cost of maintenance, it is important to look at the overall costs throughout time rather than a one-off payment.

TPMs will create a bespoke solution to your requirements, where fixing the problem and improving workflow are a priority. The third-party maintenance provider’s focus on fixing the issue often results in machinery’s life being prolonged where possible.

Coverage

As mentioned above, OEMs often only provide maintenance for one brand of machine tool, therefore may be unable to fix problems across multiple tools. However instead, TPMs are often experienced in a range of brands and machine types and can therefore be called upon to work throughout your CNC machine outfit.

This is beneficial for manufacturing processes which utilise a range of machine tools, they can have one team, rather than having different maintenance providers for each machine.

Service

It is also important to consider the level of service you will receive from your maintenance provider. TPM providers will customise the machinery to suit your requirements, providing ongoing maintenance for your entire outfit.

There is often more flexibility with a third-party maintenance company, as their aim is to have your machinery back up and running, rather than selling new hardware.
