MTT’s specialist training courses empower engineers and technicians with the advanced skills and practical expertise needed to optimise machine tool performance, enhance manufacturing precision, and drive operational excellence.
This programme empowers machine tool maintenance technicians and service technicians to understand the influencing factors to machine accuracy performance. It is designed to provide the theoretical foundations and practitioner-level skills necessary to design, perform and analyse relevant measurements, leading to the appropriate and effective corrective actions.
This programme is designed for those wishing to become practitioners of machine tool accuracy performance measurement and response, or to improve their knowledge of the subject. It has been successfully delivered to maintenance departments in blue-chip companies and progressive SMEs wishing to retain control of their quality operations, with regards to machine tools.
The programme is modular, with each unit building towards a comprehensive understanding of machine tool performance:
MTAP/01 – Introduction and Overview
Orientation session for learners and their managers covering programme structure, delivery methods, and learning expectations.
MTAP/10 – Machine Tool Geometry
Understanding geometric accuracy, error sources, and measurement using manual tools and indicators.
MTAP/20 – Laser Measurement: Positioning of Linear Axes
Practical use of laser interferometry for assessing linear axis positioning using Renishaw XL-80 and XM-60 systems.
MTAP/21 – Laser Measurement: Geometric Errors of Linear Axes
Measuring straightness, angular, and other geometric errors using advanced laser tools.
MTAP/30 – Ball Bar and Machine Dynamics
Evaluating dynamic performance and diagnosing servo or control-related issues through ball bar testing.
MTAP/40 – Data Analysis and Problem Solving
Integrating measurement data for diagnostics, root-cause analysis, and implementing corrective actions or compensation.
This programme has been designed to convey the principles required for effective measurement, along with the skills to complete the task of designing, measurement and analysis of machine performance. Delivery is therefore a blend of classroom learning with practical application for the learners in workshop conditions.
Due to the nature of the programme and the different educational experiences of the learners, it is recommended that learners and their managers initially attend the taster session.
