AH Garner are industry experts in the design and manufacture of hydraulic cylinders, utilising an advanced in house machining capability to deliver turn-key solutions. Their Sierra USA skiving machine is recognised as the fastest of its kind and forms an important part of their operational capability.
In early 2023, AH Garner approached MTT with a view to securing the long term reliability and maintainability of this critical machine.
Challenge and opportunity
Due to the age and operational fatigue of the machine, AH Garner engaged MTT to conduct a capability enhancement venture via a full scale upgrade of the electrical, control, and hydraulic systems of the machine.
The objective of the upgrade was to significantly extend the life span and maintainability of the machine by utilising current technology, whilst maintaining capability. Due to limited regional support from the machine OEM, AH Garner approached MTT to carry out a large scale retrofit at 30% of the cost of a new machine.
Results and impact
MTT’s team of skilled electrical engineers designed, manufactured and integrated an updated electrical control cabinet and operator station using a Siemens 828Dsl platform with S120 series drives. Our team of experienced machine service engineers then successfully carried out an extensive strip out and installation of the electrical and hydraulic systems including replacement drives, motors, cables, valves, pipework, sensors, cooling system, etc.
The final result brought the skiver’s operational capacity up to peak performance standards at an affordable cost.
